This is the first series featuring Genis-Vell, the son of the original Captain Marvel and who had first appeared two years before in Silver Silver Annual #6. Originally called Legacy, Genis attempted to become a hero as his father but acted more a spoiled youth, lacking direction and responsibility. In this series, writer Fabian Nicieza sought to transition Genis into more traditional heroics and as such he did not adopt the name of Captain Marvel until the end of #4.
The series was canceled early with #6, though Nicieza was able to tie up the loose ends of his run in #14 of the next Captain Marvel series.
