When Cable took over tutelage of the New Mutants, he began training them to function as a more-militant strike force compared to the passive or over-protective school structure provided by Xavier or Magneto. Eventually, the New Mutants' roster, mission, and headquarters changed so significantly that the group recast themselves as X-Force.
