Advanced Idea Mechanics was originally the science and technology department of HYDRA before breaking off as a separate organization. The organization was bought out by Sunspot on behalf of the Avengers, leading to a period of heroic-oriented Avengers Idea Mechanics and American Intelligence Mechanics. Eventually, the science terrorists reclaimed the acronym as Sunspot and Toni Ho rebranded their benevolent scientists as R.E.S.C.U.E.
