History with X-Men/UXN
While I was aware of X-Men from the 90s cartoon, I was pretty young to fully appreciate the themes and become a fan. Thus, I bloomed into my mutant mania after being a fan of the movies and X-Men Evolution in the early 2000s. My first comics were some Ultimate Spider-man trade paperbacks that the school library had and I first started visiting the comic shop because that was where fellow nerds gathered to play the Yu-Gi-Oh! Trading Card Game. I started buying comics as a way to justify going to the store once a week to play cards and the sexy Rogue and Gambit Larocca covers of X-treme X-Men caught my eye.
Pretty quickly, I went down the rabbit hole with all of the Marvel gimmicks of the age hooking me. This included the Ultimate line being new reader friendly, the desire to collect all parts in a storyline meant for an eventual trade paperback, and branching into other comics through crossovers like House of M and Civil War. Former teenagers like me are to blame for the oversaturation of events in today’s age I guess. However, it was through Civil War that I was introduced to the series Cable/Deadpool. As a stereotypical nerdy teen boy I found Deadpool hilarious and thought it was great that his initials were also three W’s.
I found UXN around 2004 or so while searching online for more information about my new favorite comic franchise, and it was invaluable in helping me learn about all of the X-Men characters and which series I should try to collect. At some point I noticed that the issue summaries for the last third of Cable/Deadpool had not been written, which were some of my favorite stories and featured the greatest character ever Bob, Agent of Hydra. I tried my hand at writing Cable/Deadpool #33 and sent it to Douglas with the writers handle WorldWideWade. It was rejected because it was clearly written by a high school student and did not fit the criteria for a UXN summary. So I gave up and continued to enjoy UXN almost daily throughout college and eventually becoming a lurker turned poster on the forums.
Eventually I decided to try again to contribute to the site and very slowly managed to complete the Cable/Deadpool issues over several years, taking a break to write the Astonishing Spider-man/Wolverine mini. It was through these summaries that I realized I may have been too hasty in declaring my love for Wade as his dialogue was overbearing and a chore to summarize. I got burnt out on writing summaries and concentrated on other hobbies. Finally, in 2021 I felt like maybe I could try once more to contribute but this time on character articles. I started writing X-Statix profiles and this really clicked with me. Over the next couple years I contributed articles of varying ambition. My favorite article so far was finally being able to write the spotlight of my beloved Bob, Agent of Hydra. There are many changes coming my way but I hope to continue contributing however sporadically as long as they let me.
Personal Life
I’ve lived in various cities in Texas throughout my life and eventually bought a house with my wife in Austin. We had a baby boy in 2024 and are enjoying watching him grow every day. A love of science has always been present and a keen interest in genetics was at least partially inspired by the X-Men and the Beast. I have worked in the medical field and research for most of my career.
Obviously, I have a keen interest in many things nerdy including video games, movies, anime, and board games. I have an obsession with Super Smash Bros, my favorite movie is Scott Pilgrim Vs the World, and have created Sporcle quizzes about various Marvel/X-Men topics.
