The Reavers are introduced as a gang of about twenty cyborgs living in a ghost town in Australia. They rob a Hong Kong bank and take Jessan Hoan, a beautiful financial expert hostage. To travel the vast distances the group uses a mutant aborigine named Gateway, who has the ability to create teleport gates with his bull roarer. Back in the australian outback they celebrate their victory. In their treasure room Pretty Boy uses his eye tentacles to tap into Jessan‘s mind; he wants to do a psychic reprogramming. Suddenly the X-Men arrive, Longshot interrupts the exchange severing the tentacles with one of his blades. The rest of the team easily defeats the drunken and tired Reavers. Only three of them, Skullbuster, Bonebreaker and Pretty Boy, escape through one of Gateway’s portals, though badly injured. Wolverine wants to force him to open that gate once more, but Storm senses that he is not a villain.
As the X-Men argue what to do with Jessan Hoan and the captured Reavers, Roma appears. She hands them a powerful enlargeable gem called Siege Perilious. Those who pass through it’s portal are judged by the highest of powers. Their good and ill of their lives are weighed in the cosmic balance, and they are born again – given a second chance to redeem themselves. Storm gives the Reavers an option – walk through the Siege Perilious or Wolverine’s claws; they all walk through, but Jessan Hoan refuses. The X-Men fear that Jessan could reveal their existence, but they ask Roma to transport her back to Hong Kong anyway. Roma departs but leaves the gem in the X-Men’s care. She reminds them, that the Siege Perilious if for their use as well, if one has enough of the life of constant battle, he or she could walk through to get a new chance at life too. Roma also revelas that after their ressurection the X-Men are invisible to anything but the naked eye and their own devices in their headquarters. For any other technical devices the X-Men are non-existant.
