WOLVERINE: Page 24 of 27

BIOGRAPHY - Page 24

Initially, Logan’s body remained in the rubble of Paradise, though word of his death reached numerous parties. Mister Sinister and a group of Paradise test subjects led by Sharp fought over the genetic secrets of Logan’s body until Storm and the X-Men came to claim their friend’s remains. [Wolverines #1-6] At first, the cooled Adamantium surrounding Logan’s body became his tomb. After some consideration, though, the X-Men summoned Kitty Pryde to phase and extract Logan’s body from the Adamantium shell, and he was buried respectfully and in secret. The Adamantium statue and memorial remained a public monument to Logan, diverting the attention of grave robbers and other disrespectful parties. [Marvel Legacy #1, Hunt for Wolverine #1]

Even with Logan’s passing, the X-Men weren’t hurting for a Wolverine. Laura fully assumed the role of the all-new Wolverine, and she discovered new clones of herself, including a young girl named Gabby who became her side kick, Honey Badger. Daken calmed down and even worked with an X-Men team for a period of time, as did Logan’s son from another universe, Jimmy Hudson, who arrived on this Earth after Battleworld. That patchwork Earth also deposited the Wolverine from an alternate future onto Earth-616. Nicknamed “Old Man Logan,” he became a regular member of the X-Men’s present day roster in Logan’s place. Yet another alternate future version of Logan made his presence known in the modern era and was briefly mistaken for the contemporary Logan. He acquired the Space Stone for a time and eventually was revealed as Old Man Phoenix, a Logan from the end of time who merged with the Phoenix Force.

Eventually, however, the genuine Logan returned to life through machinations of a mutant known as Persephone. Possessing power over the dead, Persephone could reanimate bodies to varying degrees, from shambling zombies, to drones, to echoes that virtually recreated the skills and reactions of the being in life, only entirely under her control. She created a corporation known as Soteira, manned by her army of drones and dedicated to making humanity more efficient under her domination. She resurrected several dead mutants and associates into her kill teams, including Lord Darkwind, Graydon Creed, Omega Red II, Prism and even Daken. Wolverine was also one of these “mercenaries,” a killing machine which operated under Persephone’s control for several weeks. [Hunt for Wolverine #1, Hunt for Wolverine: Dead Ends #1]

And then, one day, he woke up. Even Persephone wasn’t clear how it happened, but apparently animating Logan’s body again kickstarted his healing factor to the point that he genuinely returned to life, outside of Persephone’s remote direction. Logan’s mind was significantly constrained at first, with nearly all of his memories locked up to prevent the flood of a century’s experiences from overwhelming him. His mental landscape was a prison, where Logan's consciousness held the keys to release his different memories, but only as necessary. Persephone was fascinated by his return and interacted with Logan through a drone play-acting as the innocent Ana, who wanted Logan to save her son from Persephone. Guided by instinct alone, Logan even fought the X-Men and killed Daken (again) without recognizing who he was facing.

Eventually, Persephone grew tired of the game and revealed to Logan that Ana was merely a puppet for her power. After explaining his resurrection, she offered Logan the opportunity to meet her in person on her space station, believing she could convince him to join her cause. Persephone thought most people were little more than drones in the first place, whose free will wouldn’t be missed. She recruited her “Brilliant Ones,” scientists and artists whose minds could not be replicated through her power, and created a satellite network that would beam the equivalent of a neural EMP around the globe, painlessly killing everyone left on the ground. Through mechanical augmentation she would then awaken the world as drones to build a true utopian society for those who remained to appreciate it. Logan rejected Persephone’s mad plan and, while fighting through her brother Zagreus and the kill teams, released all his memories from inside his mind and reclaimed his status as “the best there is.” Wolverine brought down the satellite network, foiling Persephone’s plot. Logan attempted to reconnect with the X-Men, but several detours kept him from returning home. He was drawn into an encounter regarding the Infinity Stones by Loki and his own future self, “Old Man Phoenix.” [Wolverine: Infinity Watch #1-5] He crossed paths with Old Man Logan, his other future self who remained active in the present, on his way back to his own time period in the Wastelands. [Dead Man Logan #6] Finally, the Weapon X Program had reactivated in his absence and created an absurd hybrid of him and Banner in the form of Weapon H. Logan, Banner and Weapon H’s Clay Cortez teamed up to confront the Leader and Dr. Alaina Alba to stop their further experiments in gamma-augmented Weapon X subjects. [Hulkverines #1-3] Because of these side-trips, Wolverine was off the grid when nearly the entire X-Men roster to date was seemingly killed on Quadra Island in a battle involving Nate Grey, Magneto, Apocalypse and others.

Anti-mutant sentiment surged in the vacuum left by Earth’s most powerful mutants, led by the Office of National Emergency and their new vaccine inhibiting the X-gene in children, nicknamed “Vaxx.” Logan was still believed dead by the world at large and was not certain what to do in the aftermath of so many dead. The decision was made for him by Cyclops, who had also been recently resurrected too late to do anything about the massacre. At an anti-mutant rally, Summers announced over a broadcast for all remaining X-Men to meet him “where it all began.” Logan found Scott in Westchester, facing down the Reavers, the Purifiers and the Sapien League, all of whom responded to his message. Cyclops and Wolverine fought back-to-back against those who hated and feared them. In the aftermath, the two men silently acknowledged and moved past everything that had gone down between them and prepared to get to work. [Uncanny X-Men (5th series) #11]

The O*N*E had taken several X-Men prisoner prior to Quadra Island, making that their first stop. Scott and Logan liberated Havok and several New Mutants as the core of their last-standing X-Men team. With a few more allies, Scott proposed their final acts in the twilight of mutantkind should be to clean up old threats and messes. The X-Men began hunting down dangers, such as the Dark Beast, Marauders, MLF and Brotherhood. Through some private deals with Val Cooper and Captain America, they turned their prisoners over to allies they could trust rather than the O*N*E. Some other surprises turned up during these missions, like Kwannon being alive again in her original body, and Juggernaut choosing to leave the Brotherhood and rejoin the X-Men. [Uncanny X-Men (5th series) #12-16]

Things fell apart when Wolfsbane grew tired of fighting and tried to retire from the X-Men. She was killed on the streets by a group of young men who harassed her, then freaked out when they learned she was a mutant. Rahne refused to fight back and her death was a turning point for the X-Men who remained. Instead of going to her funeral, Logan had Kwannon help him hunt the men down for revenge, leading to a fight with both them and the O*N*E. Cyclops was furious with Logan’s priorities during this time of mourning, and the scuffle that followed only ended when Juggernaut happened to mention Emma Frost. It turned out that neither Scott, nor Logan, nor any of the other X-Men present, knew who this Frost woman was. [Uncanny X-Men (5th series) #17]

This revelation ended the immediate fight, but Logan was done with the X-Men. He openly acknowledged that his time as a teacher and mentor figure was behind him… now that all the children under his care had died. Instead, he was going back to what he was best at. Wolverine and Kwannon tracked down Frost and discovered she and the Hellfire Club were forced collaborators with O*N*E. He nearly escaped, but O*N*E’s new techno-organic Sentinels struck him into a coma. After he woke up, Logan learned Emma had enacted a plan to make all mutants telepathically undetectable to normal humans. Many more friends and allies were lost killing General Callahan, the last remaining human protected from Emma’s spell. Miraculously, Jean, Kitty, Kurt and all the X-Men thought lost on Quadra Island returned at that moment. Together, the X-Men decided that hiding was not their way. They undid Emma’s spell to confront humanity’s resistance to mutants firsthand, rather than live in secret. [Uncanny X-Men (5th series) #18-22]

Logan’s friend Saviano was a famous singer who also helped smuggle oppressed people to safety as part of his entourage. When he went missing, Wolverine got involved and learned the Hand had taken Saviano to the Savage Land. [FCBD 2019: Avengers/Savage Avengers #1] Saviano had already been sacrificed to Jhoatun Lao, the Marrow God, by the sorcerer Kulan Gath. He had been bait to lure Wolverine to the site, along with other prospective warrior sacrifices like Elektra, Doctor Voodoo, Venom, Punisher and the time-displaced Conan the Barbarian. The Marrow God rose, but these collective warriors defeated him. Kulan Gath escaped, laughing that these six had been bound by ritual as he planned all along. They went their separate ways for now, but “Logan of Pabst” made a good impression on Conan of Cimmeria, who would seek him for further adventures in the future. [Savage Avengers (1st series) #1-5]
