Random eventually recovered, and fell back into McCoy’s clutches. As part of a complicated double-cross, Havok asserted command of McCoy and Fatale, forcing them to serve as part of his new Brotherhood. In truth, Havok had regained his senses and was trying to learn more about McCoy’s overall agenda to curtail his plans. The Dark Beast knew this, but was playing along while keeping Random’s activities on his behalf separate from the Brotherhood. Calling himself “Alex,” Random was recruiting the homeless and runaways off the street to serve as experimental fodder for McCoy’s work. Random’s mercurial conscience started to get the better of him again, especially after McCoy started working on a girl named Mary Stewart whom Random had become fond of.

Havok became allied with Xavier’s Underground Enforcers, time-travelers who warned him his efforts against McCoy were destined to end in disaster. The Dark Beast had isolated and replicated the strain of the Legacy Virus which infected the human Moira MacTaggert, turning Mary and the others into carriers of the lethal virus now totally transmissible to humans. McCoy was trying to escape with Mary in a containment suit to further his research, but Random finally stood up to McCoy to prevent any further harm from coming to Mary. However, Havok and the X.U.E. arrived just then, and Alex had plenty of pent up aggression to turn on Random. McCoy used the distraction to escape, but at least the X.U.E. prevented Havok from accidentally releasing the contagion on New York. Random saved Havok from a bacterial bomb left behind by Dark Beast, and so the two men called a truce on their grudges, at least for the time being. [X-Factor (1st series) #143-144]

Random remained as guardian of Mary and the other Legacy-infected humans for a time. He broke another mutant named Feral out of prison before learning that she too was infected with the Legacy Virus. It’s not known if Random himself contracted the virus, but he and Feral later joined Pyro’s Strikeforce in league with the Acolytes in order to find a cure for the Legacy virus. Exodus and the Acolytes believed the High Evolutionary and his Isotope E could be the key to a cure, so Strikeforce kidnapped the Evolutionary’s New Men to learn his location. They tracked Quicksilver and the Knights of Wundagore to the High Evolutionary’s secret lair in the Savage Land, but were unable to capture him or the Isotope E. The dismissive Acolytes then abandoned Strikeforce in the Savage Land to their fate. [Quicksilver #8-9]

The Legacy Virus was eventually cured, but the ultimate fate of Mary and those infected is uncertain. Random eventually made his way to Genosha and joined an army of mutants serving Magneto, who was rattling his sabers for war. The X-Men defeated Magneto before he managed to bring his war to humanity, though. [X-Men (2nd series) #112] Back in America, Random became one of dozens of mutants captured by the Weapon X Program and sentenced to their Neverland concentration camp. He was held against his will for months until the War of the Programs turned different factions of Weapon X against each other, leading many to escape from Neverland. [Weapon X (2nd series) #5]

When the Decimation struck, the mutant race was suddenly on the brink of extinction. Well over 90% of the active mutants on Earth lost their powers, and anti-mutant groups were emboldened to finish the job. Random joined a new incarnation of the Acolytes, serving under Exodus’ banner to find some future for their people. Random retained his scruples, insisting the Acolytes only hurt people when absolutely necessary. Their small band infiltrated the S.H.I.E.L.D. Helicarrier when the X-Men were aboard. Exodus hoped to use the knowledge from Cable’s mind and S.H.I.E.L.D.’s equipment to build an advanced version of Cerebro and locate the new mutants emerging since the Decimation to repopulate their race. To his horror, they discovered the Decimation not only eliminated existing mutants, it was also preventing new mutant births from occurring as well. [X-Men (2nd series) Annual (2007) #1]

A desperate Exodus brought Random and the Acolytes into alliance with Mister Sinister and the Marauders. Their coalition was prepared when the first new mutant birth since M-Day did occur, a potential mutant messiah who signaled the possible return of their people. The Acolytes soon entered into conflict with the X-Men, the Purifiers and other factions seeking to control the future of mutantkind. [Messiah CompleX crossover] After Cable took the messiah into the future to raise her away from potential threats, the Acolytes were at loose ends. Exodus helped restore a critically injured Charles Xavier in the hopes he might contribute something to their mission. [X-Men: Legacy (1st series) #209-210] Instead, Xavier oversaw the dissolution of the Acolytes. He convinced Exodus he was doing a disservice to the mutant race by maintaining separate factions warring with each other. Random and several Acolytes ended up traveling to San Francisco, where the X-Men were setting up a safe haven for the remaining mutants on Earth. [X-Men: Legacy (1st series) #225]

Mutantkind continued to face perils and was forced out of San Francisco onto an island called Utopia off the coast of California. Random was in residence when the mutant messiah returned, now a teenaged girl named Hope, and faced attacks by Sentinels from the present and the future. He stood with the X-Men and other mutant defenders of Utopia until the Nimrod Sentinels were beaten. [Second Coming crossover] After Hope manifested her powers and began triggering new mutant manifestations, it seemed the tide had turned for the mutant race. Random contributed to the X-Men’s efforts to cohabitate with the people of San Francisco, helping with clean-up activities on the mainland after the Sentinel attacks were stopped. [X-Men: Legacy (1st series) #242-243] Still, he became restless when Hope and her new mutants, the “Lights,” continued to receive special treatment on Utopia compared to the other residents. Random and his associates squabbled with the Lights briefly, and he was influenced into attacking Hope herself when one of the Lights named Kenji had his own gripes with the “messiah.” [Generation Hope #15-17]

After the rise and fall of the Phoenix Five, the X-Men and their allies largely abandoned the Utopia island, returning to Westchester. Tired of constantly moving, Random remained on Utopia with Boom Boom, Karma, Masque, Elixir and Madison Jeffries. They hoped to just live there, without bothering anyone, and remain in peace. Random in particular doubted they could ever just be left alone, and so he made a deal with the other Utopians. No retaliation, no striking back, unless some other party made a move first. They lived in peace for several months until scavengers decided to pick at the ruins of Utopia. This led to S.H.I.E.L.D. sending a field unit which in turn led to a team of X-Men being dispatched. The X-Men briefly clashed with the Utopians before offering them safe haven at the New Xavier School. They also drew a line in the sand for S.H.I.E.L.D., warning them the Utopians were off-limits for the future. [All-New X-Men (1st series) #40-41]

Time passed, and the United States was taken over by Hydra. Partly in order to have an enemy for their citizens to fear, Hydra arranged for California and the coastal region to be taken over as a mutant homeland, New Tian. It was inevitable the two nations would clash, but some in Hydra wanted that war sooner than others. On a “goodwill” visit to New Tian, Arnim Zola and Doctor Faustus brainwashed Random, Frenzy and Sunfire into making an attack on the border crossing to Hydra territory, hoping to start a war. Although he escaped capture by Hydra, Random continued to act as a rabble-rouser in New Tian, and was sent to their re-education facility at Alcatraz. He and his associates, Skids and Lorelei, were later freed in a raid by the original X-Men. [Secret Empire: United #1, X-Men: Blue #7]

Hydra fell, but mutantkind was placed in peril again when their greatest defenders, the majority of the X-Men, were seemingly killed in a single battle. This, combined with O*N*E cultivating a potential vaccine for the X-Gene, meant dark days for mutants’ futures. Random found himself swayed to join Magneto in the newest incarnation of his Brotherhood, standing up for mutant rights when few were left to do so. Cyclops and what remained of the X-Men confronted the Brotherhood in Transia. The battle was short as the X-Men uncovered it was actually Magneto’s clone Joseph who tricked the Brotherhood into falling behind his template’s banner. [Uncanny X-Men (5th series) #16]

A new mutant homeland was soon established on Krakoa, this time with the full support of Magneto, Xavier and the returning X-Men behind it. Because of alliances he had made in the past, Random was considered among the potential troublemakers for Krakoa’s dominion. However, this new land was meant to be a home for all mutants and so, in exchange for a promise of loyalty, all were welcome in this new land. [House of X #5] Random found a place in Krakoa’s space program, working in conjunction with the revitalized agency known as S.W.O.R.D. Under the command of security director Cable, Random and Risque chose to serve as security sub-directors for the Peak, the orbital station connecting Krakoa to the stars. [S.W.O.R.D. (2nd series) #1]
