About half a year later, X-Man was again accompanied by “Maddie,“ but it turned out to be an evil Jean Grey from an alternate timeline. This woman seems to have taken advantage of Madelyne’s weakened state and replaced her, only to then worm her way into Nate’s head. [X-Man #67] The exact details of the encounter between Madelyne and the evil Jean have yet to be revealed, but obviously the latter either destroyed the body Nate Grey had created for Madelyne or at least severed her consciousness’ connection to it, for when Madelyne appeared next, she was stuck on the astral plane as a “psionic ghost”.

When Apocalypse had captured the fabled Twelve, among them Cyclops and Cable, and was about to drain them of their energies to gain omnipotence, Madelyne sensed her son’s distress and granted him his last wish – to be with his parents one last time. Pulling the consciousnesses of Cyclops and Cable to the astral plane, Madelyne made this reunion happen, and offered to stay together like this forever. Yet, both her husband and her son were unwilling to enter the afterlife without at least trying to fight Apocalypse. Instead, they asked for Madelyne to help them against the seemingly unbeatable foe, but she declined, arguing that in her current state this was beyond her abilities. [Cable (2nd series) #76]

Madelyne’s consciousness remained trapped on the astral plane for months if not years. The long time in isolation, in a state neither truly dead nor alive, took its toll, and eventually she began to blame Cyclops and the X-Men for her predicament. Driven by an unjust need for revenge, she found that she wasn’t as helpless as she originally thought herself to be, as she could still tap into the demonic magic she had wielded as the Goblin Queen and could get others to do her bidding.

Managing to manifest in an intangible, yet nonetheless real form, Madelyne adopted the guise of the Red Queen and started a sadomasochistic relationship with the White Queen’s former student, Empath. By torturing him with a mix of pleasure and pain, Madelyne learned everything there was to know about  Cyclops’ new lover; in fact, she later even psionically impersonated the White Queen and had virtual sex with Cyclops who didn’t notice the difference. Around the same time, Empath followed Madelyne’s instructions and created an anti-mutant group called Hellfire Cult, which inadvertently led to an investigation of the X-Men and Empath’s capture. That had been Maddie’s plan all along, though, as she needed a mole inside the X-Men’s home, and from the holding pens, Empath could subversively influence the X-Men’s emotions for her. [Uncanny X-Men (1st series) #501-503]

Over the next weeks, Madelyne approached several of the X-Men’s female foes and convinced them to join her Sisterhood by promising them either revenge on the X-Men or resurrecting some of their loved ones. Whether she was actually capable of just that is unknown, and eventually some of the Sisterhood members began to doubt their leader’s true intentions. Indeed, Maddie’s first priority was to orchestrate her own return as a person of flesh and blood; for that she needed to find a body to inhabit that could contain the psyche of such a powerful psi-talent.

However, before she would undergo the risky treatment herself, Madelyne decided to test the magical ritual on a guinea pig. Carrying out Madelyne’s orders, the Sisterhood retrieved the body of Revanche from a private cemetery in Japan. After Spiral repaired Revanche’s decaying body as much as possible, Madelyne Pryor successfully performed the magical spell that infused the corpse with the life-force of Psylocke, whom the Sisterhood had captured earlier. [Uncanny X-Men (1st series) #504, 508-509]

Entering the next stage of her plan, Madelyne had some of the Sisterhood engage the X-Men, providing a necessary distraction while she and Spiral made their way to Jean Grey’s grave in Westchester.  While they were also opposed by some of the X-Men, Madelyne eventually made her way to Jean’s coffin and attempted to merge with her, despite Cyclops’ warnings. Having correctly guessed Madelyne’s goal, the X-Men had secretly switched the corpse in the grave, which Madelyne only learned until it was too late. The second she bound herself to the corpse, she perished, as the decayed body could not contain her vast psionic energies. [Uncanny X-Men (1st series) #510-511]

Madelyne's repreive came in the form of the sentient bacteria, Arkea, who had created her own Sisterhood in bid to take on the X-Men. Needing a powerful telepath at her side, Arkea used the body of the severely injured Ana Cortes and manipulated her DNA so that Madelyne psyche would be compatible. Then Amara the Enchantress used her considerable magical abilities to place Madelyne's spirit within the body, as well as altering its physical form to look like Madelyne's former body. Naturally the X-Men were hot on Arkea's trail and when they arrived they were shocked to see the newly resurrected Madelyne. Grateful to Arkea for bringing her back to life, Madelyne telepathically attacked Rachel Grey and easily took her out the fight. However, the X-Men soon gained the upper hand but in a surprising twist, Storm offered for Madalyne, as well as Selene Gallio, the option to walk away. Without much of a second thought, the two women abandoned Arkea in favour of staying alive and free. [X-Men (4th series) #11-12]

Madelyne has not been heard of since she left Arkea to her fate. But with a new body and an old grudge against the X-Men it will only be a matter of time before she returns.
