Danielle’s powers further evolved, in that she was now capable of focusing her astral energy into a semi-tangible bow and arrows, which, upon contact with the intended target, would either allow her to establish mental contact, projecting the person’s primal thoughts in her own mind's eye, or create a backlash into her opponent. This backlash included overwhelming them with their own mental images, up to the point of causing severe injury and even death, or, depending on Moonstar’s intentions, healing.
Back on Earth, Dani was contacted by the international law enforcement agency S.H.I.E.L.D and asked to infiltrate the Mutant Liberation Front (M.L.F.) as a deep cover operative and betray the group from within. [X-Force (1st series) #66-67] Although it meant abandoning everyone she held dear and lying to her friends and family, Dani accepted. Simply calling herself Moonstar, she joined the terrorist group that had been re-organized by the mutant terrorist named Reignfire.
During her time with the MLF, Moonstar was forced to battle X-Force, alongside other members of the Front. To maintain her cover, she used her psionic arrows on her former teammates without hesitation. [X-Force (1st series) #27-28] When asked why she was working alongside these known criminals, Dani could not dare to jeopardize the secrets she held and simply explained that it was something she had to do. She also assured X-Force, that despite them being on different teams with different goals, she was still their friend. She proved this several times, such as when she helped them during the Younghunt, an Upstarts competition targeting all surviving members of the New Mutants and the Hellions, or, in another incident, assisted Cable when he was tracking down Feral. [X-Force (1st series) #34, 41]
With growing concern, Moonstar observed the MLF’s leader, Reignfire, whom she believed to be Sunspot, her former teammate and friend. She carefully tried to influence him to use less violent methods to achieve the MLF’s goals, but her plans backfired as he then realized that she was not entirely honest with him. Before long, Reignfire became mad at her and lashed out with his powers, killing Dani’s horse Darkwind. X-Force arrived just in time before Dani would have shared the steed’s fate and the villain was apprehended. [X-Force Annual #3, X-Force (1st series) #43]
Despite their leader being gone, Moonstar continued to stay with the terrorist organization, hoping to ensure that no innocents were killed on their missions. However, when she received a distress call from Asgard’s Valkyries and was given the Valkyries’ life-force for safe-keeping, Dani sought the help of her old teammates among X-Force, as they had been to the realm of the Norse gods before. With her friends’ help, Moonstar was able to overcome the uneasy alliance of the dark elf Malekith and Hela to rescue the Valkyries. She used one of her psychic arrows to bypass Hela and return the Valkyries their bundled life-force. [X-Force Annual ‘97]
The undercover assignment finally ended when the MLF was cornered by troops of Operation Zero Tolerance. Fearing for Danielle’s safety, SHIELD director G.W. Bridge contacted X-Force and explained that she had been providing him with information. The team rushed to the building where the MLF had taken a few hostages, some of whom some were Prime Sentinels in disguise. Upon their arrival, a battle erupted between the three different groupings. While the majority of the terrorist group were captured and arrested, Moonstar and Forearm, the only one of the MLF she would call friend, escaped with X-Force. Learning of her having been a spy the entire time, Forearm felt betrayed and was as disappointed as Dani’s old teammates had been when they had first seen her among the Mutant Liberation Front. [X-Force (1st series) #66-69]
As the Zero Tolerance troops had stolen the computer files of Professor Xavier, Cable set up a number of secret identities for the team, even one for Dani, but she refused. For too long she had been undercover and she no longer wanted to hide behind a facade. X-Force agreed with her and, severing all ties with Cable, they went out on a road trip until they ended up in San Francisco. [X-Force (1st series) #70]
During the team’s encounter with operatives of the Damocles Foundation, Dani was accidentally transmorphed into a crystal like state by the reality warping Arcadia DeVille, who had no real control over her abilities. A few minutes later, Moonstar reverted back to flesh and blood, and it seemed that nothing had changed. X-Force and Arcadia parted ways, unaware of the side effects that this incident would cause. [X-Force (1st series) #84]
Over the next days and weeks, Moonstar discovered that her body had been altered on a molecular level and that she possessed a new power. She could now channel the quantum energies that make up the universe, which allowed her to affect matter at a subatomic level. Through learning-by-doing, Dani found a way to perceive these quantum energies as interconnected particles and waves. She found she could affect those connections, changing the physical nature of all things, including an electromagnetic field such as the one generated by Magneto during X-Force’s encounter with him in Genosha. [X-Force (1st series) #87, 93, 95]
It was not only Moonstar who had been changed, but Arcadia too. Their brief encounter had created some sort of link between the two women and they began to access each other’s memories and nightmares. Haunted by visions of the Demon Bear, Arcadia accidentally provided this monstrosity with a new physical form and chaos ensued in San Francisco. Moonstar and DeVille were both consumed by the Bear, who wanted to add their powers to his own.
However, from within, the two women tried to re-absorb the energies that had been used in his creation.Evidently it worked and the Bear was destroyed, but Arcadia could not handle the increased power level and retreated deep within her own mind. She transformed herself into the Queen of the Star Swords, an evil character from one of her childhood tales. Perceiving Moonstar as a potential threat, she split her apart with four different Moonstars appearing, each representing different aspect of Dani - New Mutant, Valkyrie, M.L.F., and quantum-powered, while the real Moonstar was left a powerless husk.
Out of thin air, the Queen created a cathedral in a dimensional rift as her headquarters and, venturing inside, X-Force became lost in different alternate timelines. Eventually, they managed to track down the Moonstar-fragments and Dani was reunited. Using her abilities in combination, Moonstar ended the threat of the Queen / Arcadia, as she channeled the entire might of her quantum-based powers into a psionic arrow, which sealed the rift and returned Arcadia to normal. Their link severed, Dani could no longer access the quantum energies and was back to her psionic arrows and emotional illusion casting. [X-Force (1st series) #99-100]
During the so called six-month gap, some members of X-Force decided to get the British black op Pete Wisdom to train them and improve their effectiveness. However, Moonstar, like Domino, could not agree with his methods and quit the team. [X-Force (1st series) #106]
Instead, she joined the X-Men on a part-time basis, whilst she attended college classes in her spare time. Dani rarely went on any missions, but mostly functioned as mansion staff along with Forge. [X-Men (2nd series) #102]
