BIOGRAPHY - Page 7
Miraculous changes were on the horizon for mutantkind, and Forge played no small part in them. Years ago, in anticipation of future developments, Charles Xavier had commissioned Forge to help him vastly improve and redefine his mutant detection system, Cerebro. Instead of merely searching for mutant minds, Xavier wanted Cerebro to maintain them – a perfect copy of every mutant mind on the planet, regularly updating with multiple redundancies and no upper limit on volume. Forge explained that such as a system was theoretically conceivable, providing one had unlimited power and unlimited storage. With his connections in the Shi’ar Empire, Xavier was able to provide Forge with just that. Years passed, and now the breakthrough Xavier had been anticipating had come to pass. The perfect congregation of mutants had come together in a circuit, able to manipulate time, biology and reality, allowing these Resurrection Five to create perfect husk bodies for any deceased mutant using existent genetic material as a base. With Cerebro to restore the mind and the Five to restore the body, no mutant needed to ever fear death again.
The Five were only one aspect of Xavier’s plan to build a nation for all mutants on the living island of Krakoa. Cypher, a hyper-linguist, worked to build an interface with Krakoa’s consciousness so that other mutants could interact with it. From this starting point, a new era of biotechnology could begin. Forge began working alongside other mutant scientists and technopaths like Doctor Nemesis, Beast, Sage, Trinary and Wiz-Kid to familiarize himself with Krakoa’s adaptive bio-matter and the range of functions it could take on. As time passed, Forge developed a working knowledge of how to apply his abilities to Krakoa’s resources, and he started producing organic weapons and technology for Krakoan military and covert operations on demand. [Powers of X #4-5]
In the heart of Krakoa, Forge established the Armory, where he worked to outfit those who needed it with biological technology grown from the island. He quickly made connections with X-Force, Krakoa’s “deniable operations” bureau. Forge and the Armory outfitted Domino with a neuro-responsive weapons gauntlet and maintained a vat of liquid Adamantium to refit Wolverine’s skeleton if he were killed in the field and needed resurrection. Forge was not above getting his hands dirty either and joined X-Force against a Mercs raid using organically-grown exoskeletal wingsuit. [X-Force (6th series) #4-5]
Forge’s past work came back to haunt him when Kate Pryde and the Marauder encountered Russian soldiers wearing power-dampening armor. Storm observed the armor in action and believed it was based on Forge’s Neutralizer technology. She brought the matter to Forge, who initially balked at the idea since he had carefully and deliberately erased all traces of his work before leaving the Department of Defense. It dawned on him, however, that one of his engineering team named Daniels had a photographic memory. Suspecting the worst, Forge joined the Marauders in attacking a Russian vessel ferrying the armor. Daniels was found inside, an unwilling prisoner forced to reverse-engineer Forge’s work. They scuttled the ship, sinking the tech and mindwiping the men on-board. Forge was happy to be reunited with Daniels, who had been sabotaging the work to make the armor less effective. Still, in Krakoa’s national interest, Daniels could not be sent home. He submitted to a mild mind-wipe by Emma Frost and was relocated to Rio Verde, Arizona, a private community run by Krakoa for the Morlocks and other mutants who preferred to be off-island. [Marauders (1st series) #10]
Forge's support of Krakoa continued when he helped X-Factor Investigations set up their case tracking system. X-Factor was in charge of providing "proof of death" confirmations to the Five before the Resurrection queue got out of hand. Forge bio-engineered fleet seeds for public dispersal, allowing the average citizen to make a missing persons report and have it delivered on the wind to X-Factor at the bone yard. He and Sage also rigged a new protocol for Cerebro to send an alert when it failed to generate a new backup for any mutant. [X-Factor (4th series) #1] When Dracula and the Vampire Nation targeted Wolverine, Forge helped armor Logan's ally Louise of the Nightguard with anti-vampire gear. [Wolverine (7th series) #12] He also designed a microscopic singularity generator for Mystique, during her aborted attempt to eliminate Nimrod aboard the Orchis space habitat. [X-Men (5th series) #20] Finally, perhaps most critically, Forge counseled Magneto on how a collection of Omega-class mutants could conceivably terraform Mars on behalf of Krakoa. [Planet-Size X-Men #1]
Forge wanted to become a member of the X-Men the night the new team was chosen by telepathic consensus at the Hellfire Gala. Still, when he wasn't chosen, he came together to toast the new team with the other potential candidates. This group was later brought together by the Shi'ar Empress Xandra to serve as her "secret" X-Men allies in case the throne was ever threatened. Sunspot assembled the team at Xandra's direction, and convinced Forge to fabricate a special set of costumes for their new roster. They remain on call for Xandra, ready to support Krakoa's ally, the Shi'ar Empire. [Secret X-Men #1]
Forge and the mutants of Krakoa were alert and concerned when the Phoenix Force returned to Earth and chose the Avenger, Echo, as its latest host. Forge brazenly chose to contain Echo for her own good until it could be proven that she was in control of the Phoenix. He created a device that mimicked her energy signature, drawing her to Easter Island. Forge tried to make his point by showing her the damage to the island, an aftermath of her fight with Namor for the Phoenix Force, but Forge's arrogance and presumptiveness rubbed Echo the wrong way. He activated a set of psychic restraints and tried to bury her in a capsule prepared for the moment, but Echo rejected his cage and burned herself free. He was lucky the Phoenix chose to let him live after that insult.
As it happened, Forge's ancient foe the Adversary had his own plans for Maya Lopez. Forge tracked Maya to the Rez, a meeting ground for different tribes, and discovered the Adversary trying to wipe out her ancestral line throughout history. He returned to his spiritual roots and tracked the Adversary, Maya, and a visionary named River to the White Hot Room. The three Cheyenne joined forces to oppose the Adversary, and Echo fought him at the beginning of time to end the Adversary's timeline instead. Forge and Maya made amends. He accepted she was able to control her power, and she agreed to stay in touch with him to learn more about the history of the Phoenix. [Phoenix Song: Echo #1-5]
Forge's understanding of Krakoan bio-tech and means of deploying it continued to grow by leaps and bounds. He designed the Earth-Arakko Relay for rapid communication between Krakoa and their terraformed planet. It employed partially grown telepathic brains distributed through a series of satellites for speed of thought communication. Forge also created the "Captain Krakoa" battle suit alongside Jumbo Carnation's design input. A prototype of casual bio-tech wear for mutants whose abilities didn't lend themselves to combat or self-defense, the prototype was deployed when Cyclops died very publicly, forcing him to adopt a new super-hero identity to remain active with the X-Men. Cyclops seemed very interested in Forge's new work, and offered him a new place on the X-Men. Despite his earlier interest, Forge declined membership this time. [X-Men (6th series) #6-8]
At the next Hellfire Gala, the X-Men were once again being chosen by telepathic consensus. Cyclops put forward Forge's name for consideration by the crowd, pressing him to accept the public nomination. Forge couldn't say no under these circumstances, but he also expressed he could never join without his friend (and Scott's brother) Havok. After the new team was chosen, Forge privately communed telepathically with Professor Xavier of the Quiet Council, vowing that Project: Blackbox would remain secret. It seemed Cyclops couldn't get information on Blackbox through normal channels, so he wanted to bring Forge into the X-Men to monitor him more closely. Forge, in turn, nominated Havok for the team in order to distract Cyclops from investigating Forge's work. How this conflict of interests will play out remains to be seen. [X-Men: Hellfire Gala #1]
